Establishing Traditions

You've probably heard someone say that it's super important for children to have a routine. Our little ones need consistency in their lives to feel safe and comfortable. Makes sense to me, so I won't argue with the "experts" on this one! I think part of establishing a routine for your family is setting up traditions that you can enjoy together year after year.

Traditions give you something to look forward to. Traditions make memories. Traditions give you an excuse to make another scrapbook page! Haha. As we enter into the Fall season, there are so many opportunities you can create for your family to enjoy together. Try something new, and if you love it, try it again next year. And then: "TADA!" you have a tradition.

So here is one of our favorite Fall traditions: Pumpkin picking at Eckert's!

Eric and I have been heading out to Eckert's family farm for several years now to choose our perfect pumpkins. The autumn atmosphere is just amazing there. Funnel cakes, caramel apples, cider, strolling through the country store, and then of course loading onto a wagon and heading out to the dotted orange pumpkin patch to choose our seedy specimen
Here we are pre-children starting our family tradition!

We knew that this was something we wanted to do every year as a family even before we had kids of our own (heck, before we were even married!) Last year we were able to take our firstborn with us for the very first time, and it was wonderful. Evelyn was only about 4 months old at the time, so we avoided actually going out to the patch; instead, we searched around the pre-picked selection to find the orange gourds that would come home with us.

Be still my heart! *Sigh* I love Fall.

I am already getting amped up for this year's trip to Eckert's. Now that we have a little one toddling around, I think we'll try the actual patch this year. Eeee, I'm so excited! Of course, I'll be carrying around a belly the size of a pumpkin myself as we wade through the fields. Our plan is to go the very first weekend in October, since I'm due to have Gracie October 13. If we wait any longer than that, we may not get the chance to go at all, and that would be an utter travesty! We CANNOT break tradition. Not this tradition. Not my most favorite tradition of all! (Anyone else humming "Fiddler on the Roof" tunes, yet?)

So what traditions do you have established as a family? Don't have a Fall tradition? Well, you're in luck because now is the perfect time to brainstorm one! Here are a few ideas to get you started:

~Pumpkin picking (has to top the list!)
~Apple picking
~Family campfire night
~Fall Festivals
~Caramel apple making
~Hayrides
~Pumpkin carving
~A day at the lake (or pond, or large puddle...)
~An autumn picnic with Fall-themed food

Oh geez, there's so many and I want to personally do them all! I hope your family has a wonderful season keeping and creating traditions!
