Do You "Boo?"

If you're from our area, probably not. :) Staying connected with other moms on message boards is a great way to learn about fun traditions in other areas of the country and around the world. Last year around just this time I learned all about "Booing" and how common it is in other places...even though I had never even heard of it! I knew that it was something fun that our family would have to do, too.

So what's a "Boo?" Well, it's sort of like a chain letter in the way it works. Friends and neighbors will put together little treats for two households on their street or in their city, they put the treats on their friend's doorstep, ring the doorbell, and run like a crazy person to get away without being seen. :) Tucked within the treats will be a little poem that goes something like this:

The spooks are after things to do,
In fact a spook brought this "Boo" to you!
The excitement comes when friends like you,
Copy this note and make it two.
We'll all have smiles upon our faces,
No one will know who "BOO"ed who's places!
Just two short days to work your spell,
Keep it secret, hide it well.
Please join the fun, the seasons here .
Just spread these "BOO's" and Halloween cheer.

There are many other variations, but that's the closest to the one we used. :) So over the weekend we gathered some Halloween items and waited until last night to go out and make a little mischief. Our family had a LOT of fun doing this together.

We started the boo with three different households of friends and family members from different corners of our town. We wanted to spread it out as much as we could. So if you didn't get ding-dong ditched last night, it's because we had to leave some friends and family free to be Boo'd by other people! :) If you DID get Boo'd and you think this is totally lame and decide not to do it, that's okay. Haha. You're certainly not obligated to keep it going - it's just something fun to do. Obviously I'm not able to stay anonymous with the friends we visited, but the idea is that no one will know who boo'd each other. It's part of the mystery. ;) And there are no rules saying that you can't visit friends from other towns, too. So you don't have to live in our city to be Boo'd.

We spent about $5 - $6  per household putting together these treats by visiting the Target dollar spot and Dollar Tree, so it doesn't have to be a big expense. Just something to bring a smile to a friend's face!

To document our adventures last night we put together a little slideshow. We began our evening with a yummy Chili dinner, packed everything into the stroller, and set off for a night of fun. There were barking dogs, close calls, and lots of giggling involved. :) (Please forgive my lack of shower and makeup. It was dark, what can I say?) You can make this video full screen to see the pictures more clearly.

Running from those houses was the most exercise I've gotten in a LONG time, haha.

So no matter where you live, consider starting a "Boo" chain this Fall season! It's a fun way to spend an evening and to appreciate your friends and neighbors. Boo! To! You!

We used to do this when our boys were little, except we had a ghost that went with the treats. You put it on your door so everyone would know you were already "boo-ed". A great Halloween activity!

Sarah- I was terrified to leave anything at your house, because the door was OPEN. I was trying so hard not to bust out laughing. :D
