Give Like No One Else - Operation Homefront

Our very last Financial Peace University Lesson was called:  The Great Misunderstanding, and it summed up the reason many of us wish to be financially free - to GIVE like no one else.

We learned a lot about investments and building wealth over the last 13 weeks...but...then what? What do we do with that wealth once we have it? Eventually new cars will lack their luster, stuff is just stuff, and even too much lobster begins to taste like soap after a while.

When we live our lives with an open palm instead of a closed fist, not only will we be a blessing to other people, but we open ourselves up to receive blessings as well. If you've ever been able to give to someone in the past - even anonymously- you know what a great feeling it leaves in your heart. Your spirit feels lighter, and you can walk with a bounce in your step when you realize your money has helped someone who truly needed it instead of just buying more stuff.

It was such an encouragement to hear other people's stories of both giving and receiving this week. As we wrapped up this awesome study, we all shared which lessons were our favorites. Hands down the last lesson on giving topped many of our lists. I just want to encourage anyone who ever gets the chance to please go through Financial Peace University. I know I sound like a broken record, but it WILL change your life. :)

Recently Eric and I were able to visit with an organization that is helping many families locally....

Operation Homefront is a nonprofit organization that was formed shortly after 9/11 to support military families. They provide direct services to alleviate a military family's or individual's emergency financial burden, as well as counseling and/or recovery support. Emergency financial assistance is in the form of checks paid directly to mortgage lenders, auto mechanics, contractors, hospitals, doctors, dentists, and other providers. They also provide:

*Emergency food
*Emergency home repairs
*Critical baby items: formula, food and diapers
*Home and appliance repair
*Furniture and household items
*Local moving assistance
*Community events
*Wounded Warrior Transitional Family Housing

I can't even imagine what a blessing this organization is to moms and dads who are left behind while their spouse serves in the military. Those who use the services of Operation Homefront can go online and literally place an order for items they need, which can be given to them within 24 to 72 hours. What an awesome safety net for those serving our country!

We were able to tour the warehouse at Operation Homefront where all of the donated items are stored.

Girl Scout cookies. :)

Many people are not even aware that this organization exists, because they try to fly under the radar as much as possible. They never put out press releases or flash what they do. Because they are working so closely with the military, they try to keep their services to specific families confidential. Many soldiers don't want to make it public knowledge that their spouse is living at home alone with their children, which is totally understandable.

The walls are lined with these numbered bins filled with different household items. When a family places an online order, workers will find the corresponding numbers and fill a box for them!

While they don't put out specific information on who they are helping or when, they do have fundraisers throughout the year and would like for more people to be aware of the existence of their organization. There will be a big benefit concert coming up soon, and we will try to share that information with all of you when it becomes available!

Eric and I met the founder of Operation Homefront several weeks ago when he attended events and services for our fallen solider friend John Bradshaw. Jon Jerome began this organization in his living room, and it has certainly grown over the years! We are so excited to work with him and his crew in any ways they need us. And the first thing we promised to do was to share what they are doing with all of you. :)

Dave (who has helped with OH from nearly the beginning) and Jon Jerome - founder of OH.

I really encourage you to get on their website and click around for a while. They are doing amazing many things that I couldn't possibly share in one little blog post. And if you're ever able to volunteer with this organization, it will be a treat for you! They have so many awesome stories to share. Haha, you could chat all day long with these guys about the work that has been done over the past few years.

Jon shared with us that many times the most random items will be donated to them, and it just so happens that nearly every time within a week, someone will visit their warehouse looking for that exact item.

When private citizens decide to come together to fulfill a need, it really exemplifies what this country is all about, and what God has called his people to do. We help each other. We see a need - we fix it. We're in this thing together, and no one should ever feel that they are living this life alone.

When we have financial freedom, we are able to not only help ourselves, but to help others with abandon. That's what FPU is all about. Operation Homefront is just one way that we can fulfill a need. We have recently been encouraged to use our creative minds to find other ways to help people in our community. What can we do to make a difference in the lives of others? Anything we want!

Wow...that's a pretty cool organization. I always wanted to have the money to help out places like that.

The lengths to which Jon and the folks at Operation Homefront will go to help military families are nearly indescribable. Even if you're not on a position to help OHF financially, there may be plenty of opportunities to help them by giving of your time an effort in the future. We'll keep you posted!

Thank you for supporting such a wonderful organization! There are many families within our ranks that depend on help that is offered by organizations like this and without them they would have very few options to turn to! It means a lot to a Soldier or Service Member to have peace of mind that while they are fighting overseas or even working here at home, that thier families are taken care of in trying times.
