We're Getting Closer!

Boy oh boy, we survived open house at school! Evelyn is SO excited. Last night we packed up the entire family and trucked it to the elementary school. We bobbed and weaved through frazzled parents and kids in the hallway, dodged old teachers who saw us and shouted, "Oh no! MY kids cannot be coming here with kids of their own!" ;) And somehow we made it to the quieter corner of the school where lots of little kids wearing backpacks as big as them were checking out their new lockers and busying themselves with toys. <- And that's pretty much all Evie was interested in for the first few minutes, too.

I have no idea how they are going to wrangle 20 kids in a class on the first day of school and keep them from those toys long enough to sit still. Baha. Thank the Lord for teachers who know what they are doing!

It occurred to me as we were walking out of the door last night that the outfit Evie was wearing probably wasn't even dress code appropriate. Whoops! Gotta keep those straps at least two inches wide, or something like that. ;)

Eventually we pulled Evie away from the toys and helped her to find the table and spot where she will be sitting for the school year.

Happy!

Going to these kinds of things with Evie always cracks Eric and me up. We are NOT perfect parents by any stretch, but there are just a few things we try to instill in our kids...things we don't want to miss and want to be intentional about teaching them. One of those things is being well-mannered and assertive to both kids and adults. So our kids have no problems whatsoever with introducing themselves to people and making friends. It's a life skill! Haha.

But poor Evie. She has her line DOWN. "Hi, I'm Evelyn! What's your name??" Only to be met with blank stares 95% of the time. :D Other kids don't always seem to know what to make of her...or maybe no one has ever asked them what their name is. I honestly don't know. But we have to make sure to remind Evelyn that it doesn't mean the kids don't like her - maybe they are "just a little shy." Haha. It won't take long and they'll all be fighting over glue sticks and chasing each other on the playground!

After meeting the teacher and getting our official school handbook we braved the halls once again to show Evelyn different classrooms that she'll be going to - like the music room and the library. And then we booked it out of there, because we were starving. :)

These next pictures are classic...oh man. Gracie girl. As you can imagine, she isn't exactly thrilled about  the school thing. She wants to go, too! And we watched her move through all of the stages of grief in just a few short minutes right outside of the building.

Denial...

Anger...

Depression....

We have yet to reach "acceptance." Haha.

Eric doesn't want to miss Evie's first day tomorrow, so he's taking the day off and we're going to have a family day with some school thrown in. We're excited to send our first one off on a new adventure...even if it is only preschool. It's okay to make fun of us, I realize how sappy it all sounds...it's our first time doing this, too. :)

The rest of the week will be interesting as we adjust to a new schedule. I hope I don't forget to pick my kid up or something. Haha. No, but really...maybe I should set an alarm....

Hope you're having a great day wherever you are!

Umm...Keegan is totally that kid that gives the blank stare back when someone does that to him!! lol He is super shy with new people until he gets to know them.

Yes, I really do think it has to do with kids just being shy, haha. I feel bad when Evie descends upon them, because they look like a deer in headlights. :D

Oh that last picture is killing me!!...that pouty face is my kryptonite. When Kinley starts that face, she is going to get whatever she wants.

That is ERIC'S weakness, too. If Gracie gives that face, it isn't long before his looks like that, too. Baha!
